Facebook HQ by O + A

A renovated warehouse turned into a bright, contemporary lounge space in the new facebook headquarters - a turntable is featured in the foreground

The new Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto is like Google’s HQ, but with an extra dash of class. I found this quote in the accompanying article really intriguing:

“Because the new facility houses employees coming from various locations, the company wanted to maintain each division’s distinct identity.”

Giving your people freedom to contribute to your company’s culture means more than just giving them a blank slate to build on. You’ve got to provide a foundation and a framework that inspires contribution and collaboration.

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the people to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.

Simon Mwaura’s Mobile Remote Control Inventions

What struck me about this video was the very last line:

…if nothing is done to encourage these inventors, their dreams may remain just that – pipe dreams.

Creative endeavors need encouragement, investment, and (often) time. In the corporate environment, it’s easy to loath our executive counterparts instead of making an honest effort to win their buy-in because, while we know they need us, we often forget that we need them.

Your ideas aren’t going to get the serious attention and investment that lead to meaningful encouragement just because you’re talented. You have the advantage of already working for your employer – start making opportunities for your work to solve their problems.

Waiter... My Kool-Aid Tastes Funny

by Johnny Pitts

I’m not a UX guy (although I played one on TV), but I do secretly want to be a 404-er. I’d love to be able to create something that grabs you visually, while effectively communicating the message to you.

I can’t do that, but what I do know how to do is make that UX talent a key component to our ability to win business.
