The Kindle Can't Last

It dismisses what is universally pleasing about reading – the sensuousness of the physical page. A devise worthy of replacing our books must improve upon the page, not sacrifice it.

Simon Mwaura’s Mobile Remote Control Inventions

What struck me about this video was the very last line:

…if nothing is done to encourage these inventors, their dreams may remain just that – pipe dreams.

Creative endeavors need encouragement, investment, and (often) time. In the corporate environment, it’s easy to loath our executive counterparts instead of making an honest effort to win their buy-in because, while we know they need us, we often forget that we need them.

Your ideas aren’t going to get the serious attention and investment that lead to meaningful encouragement just because you’re talented. You have the advantage of already working for your employer – start making opportunities for your work to solve their problems.

Stream of consciousness on Microsoft Surface

This is floated through my mind while walking down the hall to get a drink:

“The future of interaction design is so circular – dials, ripples… water is a good analogy for Surface interactions. It’s organic – people understand how water reacts to the touch. Ripples. Ripples are so automatic. They just do stuff. What if the Surface was actually water… and the real ripples made things happen. Liquid computing! The AUTOMATION!!!”

Automate this!

by Matt Donovan

Touch screens and gestural interfaces are all the rage. Microsoft Surface and the iPhone are changing the way common man interacts with technology. Having come from entering command lines to clicking links to tapping screens, one wonders what the future holds for technology. I’ve got a feeling it’s automatic.

Halo Experience

HP's HALO Room in Action

I’ve used several teleconference systems before to have meetings with clients all over the world. But none of them compared to the very cool experience of using the HP Halo system I enjoyed at a client this morning. This system has been available for several years, but this was my first experience using it. The picture above doesn’t do justice to 1) how easy it was to use and 2) the “real presence” feeling it provides. Even though we were talking to people in Chicago (we’re in Dallas) it felt like we were in the same room. I think part of what makes this happen is the tight control over the color and scale of each Halo room.

BMW GINA Light Visionary Model: Premiere

This made me ask, “What kinds of ‘materials’ to I design with that may be holding back innovation?”
